We were working on content in the AEO/GEO space. Not our product — a related topic where we were building authority. The original article was solid: 3,200 words, well-researched, ranked on page 2 for a moderately competitive query.

The Structural Pattern That Works

If you're reading this expecting a checklist, you're right to. But the checklist alone won't help you. You need to understand why each element matters.

Answer in the first paragraph.

Not buried. Not after context. The first 100 words should directly answer the H1 question. This is the retrieval moment. Perplexity is parsing your page, looking for a confident answer. If the first paragraph doesn't provide it, the system doesn't wait. It moves on.

This is the single most important factor. We'd argue it's more important than everything else combined.

Question-based H2 headings.

This matters because Perplexity and other systems retrieve by query intent. If your section heading matches the query intent, the entire section becomes extractable.

Self-contained section answers.

Each H2 section should be readable independently. The first 2–3 sentences should answer the H2 question without requiring the reader (or the LLM) to check other sections for context.

This is critical. LLMs extract paragraphs in isolation. They don't read the full article and synthesise understanding. If your section assumes context from previous sections, the extraction will fail.

Specific, quotable statements.

Perplexity extracts verbatim text. It's not paraphrasing or rewriting. This means your statements need to be specific enough to quote without modification.

Vague language ("It's important to note that content structure matters") gets skipped. Specific language ("Answer-first content structure increases Perplexity citation frequency by an average of 340% within 30 days") gets extracted.

The more specific your statement, the more likely it becomes the thing Perplexity quotes instead of a competitor's version.

FAQ schema implementation.
